(late) day 4: underappreciated oc. i looked through all my active ocs and i haven't drawn mumbojumbo balderdash in years at this point...my bad, little sock thing. it's largely because i'm more interested in my serious story ocs at this point, and mumbojumbo is from my developing kid's books era. and also i think my old style suited em better, i find them harder to draw nowadays

fic idea - canon Edwin gets hit with a spell that switches him places with a modern+alive au Edwin

so when Charles runs up to Edwin to check if he's alright, he gets a confused stare and a "...Charles?! Why are you wearing a polo? And where are all of your tattoos?" from the Edwin lying on the ground who's very much Edwin, just not his Edwin. he's alive for one

the au Edwin is 18 and freshly enrolled at uni, where he's just met his new roommate, Charles, only a few weeks ago

(there's obvious tragedy in this modern Edwin learning that there's a 1910s counterpart of him who'd been killed at 16, but let's ignore that for now) the fun part is - modern Edwin would have grown up in the 2010s and wouldn't be bullied for being gay/different so he's way more open and chill than canon Edwin, still sassy and a smartass, but just more sure of himself

so much so that since he doesn't believe in ghosts, and kinda thinks this whole thing might be a dream anyway, he decides to flirt with this polo-clad version of Charles to test out the waters. he's had a crush on his roommate basically from the moment they met and they're going to eventually switch him back to his reality anyway, so he sees no harm in going for it

modern Edwin is in a t-shirt that shows off his arms and jeans, and his hair is wavy and he looks just a tad older, and has just an inch of height on Charles now (courtesy of @dear-lucrow <3), and he laughs openly and compliments Charles, and tells him he'd look good in tattoos, and Charles simply can't handle any of it!!

Crystal ("oh, you're Charles's friend, right?") is annoyed beyond belief that modern Edwin is a cynic who doesn't believe in ghosts, psychics or any magic at all

I love how as a fandom we saw Detective Noel who in the show is decently collected. Keeps a stiff upper lip and isn’t you know, Arthur levels of insane. Hes pretty calm and together for most of the time we see him. Yet we collectively decided that he is a mess. Im so proud of us, we need to give him more terrible coping mechanisms.

Wait, what exactly happened with the create of Underswap?

I can't give a firsthand recollection since I wasn't super into underswap yet at the time, but basically they left underswap to the community and deleted their blog, taking the canon info on the AU with it. I've heard people claim a variety of reasons for why they left - the popularity was overwhelming, they didn't like what people were doing with fanon, they hated how much fontcest there was, etc; I can't speak for them and don't know which if any of those are true, but they all do seem like valid possibilities to me.

the popularity reason is self-explanatory, I absolutely wouldn't blame them if this was a factor. the fanon mischaracterisations were (and arguably still are) enough of a problem for undertale itself, but for underswap in 2016 it was near-impossible to find content that didn't infantilise sans, let alone went for a nuanced personality swap, and that only worsened when that canon info was just gone to most people. and regarding the fontcest, keep in mind this was prior to tumblr's nsfw ban in 2018, meaning you couldn't look at the main undertale, underswap or underfell tags without running into nsfw and fontcest with zero warning tags for people to avoid it. I really can't overstate how unpleasant the tumblr undertale fandom could be prior to 2019 @_@

anyway underswap's creator never came back to it like underfell's did, but nowadays there's an archive of what remains of the canon info, there's way more variety in how people portray the personality swaps, and the tags are at least a bit less awful to look through, so it's an easier time to be an underswap fan than it used to be! and hopefully the creator's happier away from all of this too :]
